Sign the petition to give your councillor more control

A petition has been created for a referendum on the “cabinet” system which gives 11 of Lambeth’s councillors the power to make all decisions affecting the borough, while the others have no power at all.

If you live in the Bishop’s, Prince’s, Clapham Town, Clapham Common, Tulse Hill, Streatham Hill, Thurlow Park, Streatham Wells or St Leonard’s wards, NONE of your elected councillors have any say in making council policy. It really makes no difference at all who you vote for, they simply don’t have a say.

All the councillors in the cabinet are from the small faction of the Labour party called “Progress”, a group with their own agenda separate to that of the elected Labour party as a whole. By using the cabinet system they are able to ensure that no-one from outside of their group has any say in policy.

This is a massive affront to democracy in the borough, but Lambeth residents have the power to change it. If 12,000 people sign the petition, Lambeth will be legally obliged to hold a referendum to change the system and give every elected councillor a fair vote.
